A solid encompasses all objects that exist in that state or “phase.” There are three or four phases of matter: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma.

Liquid and gas are “fluid” states of matter, characterized by large, disordered internal movements. A solid is distinguished by the scale of these internal movements, which are much smaller. In a solid, atoms always have the same neighbors.

For liquids and gases, internal movements are greater than the interatomic distances. This is not the case for solids.
