Introduction

Hello,

I’m Shiv, a second-year Caltech PhD student coming in from Pasadena, California. Admittedly, Pasadena is overshadowed by the presence of nearby Los Angeles, but the city is not just a Los-Angeles-lite. In the States, Pasadena is a household name because of its New Year’s Day college football game, held at at an iconic stadium called the Rose Bowl. If you want to understand the fervor that defines college football (or even college athletics more generally) in America, there’s no better place to be than Pasadena’s Rose Bowl.

I have received bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and physics from the University of Chicago, and a master’s in applied mathematics from the University of Cambridge. In my current research at Caltech in compressing e-ph interactions, I have largely been treating DFT as a “black box”, but I want to arrive at a deeper conceptual understanding of the formalism. I work in a first-principles group, so DFT is foundational to our research, and I’m eager to get better acquainted in the weeks to come to guide my academic career in the years to come!
