Construction Engineering v. Materials Science

I assume an engineer only gets one attempt, maybe two at maximum. A materials scientist would probably need dozens of attempts to get their material right.

I assume the difference is that the engineer has a tried-and-tested end-to-end method to use, whereas a materials scientist is comparatively fumbling in the dark because of the lack of knowledge on atomic behaviour.
