A solid is a state of matter characterized by having a defined shape and volume, in which the atoms, ions, or molecules that compose it are closely packed and interact through strong interatomic forces. From the perspective of solid-state physics and quantum physics, a solid is a many-body system whose microscopic structure and macroscopic properties are determined by the quantization of the energy levels of its electrons and by the collective vibrations of its atomic lattice.
