We follow the rules of logic (the ultimate “1st principle”) to reach a certain model in a domain. Ab initio is only defined within a certain domain, in such a way.
This applies to quantum mechanics (or quantum physics), where a certain concept (Schrodinger equation) is extrapolated within f.i. three dimensions, or four dimensions (using Dirac) through the mere rules of logic, without adding new things along the way.
I believe in general people are unaware of the amount of abstractions or small cutoffs used even within such a concept.
I know f.i. of no theory of solid state physics that truly treat the kineatics of molecules and their elements relativistically – a vibrating molecule will after all experience a form of kinematic time dilation, that is untreated because it is “meaningless” in the order of typical timeframes and spatial dimensions of the problem.
Mathematics has also proven that it is impossible to define even the one axiomatic set of truths that yield a fundamental system.
So I think the convexity and sharpness of the definition of “ab initio” needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
