Material computations are not a theoretical activity, as they are not aimed at verifying or improving the underlying theory. Rather, they are used to simulate the known properties of materials, or to predict new ones. They provide specific answers about concrete systems, and do not help finding the new foundational principles.

One can easily confuse such simulations with theory, since practitioners of both activities usually do not conduct experiments.
