At the final step of research, I think, there is two desirable outcomes: 1) to know the object of study a little bit more, or 2) produce something (physically) useful useful for the humankind (in the sense of a palpable object). The theoretical aspects of designing materials from calculations can not be understated, and the effort is worth the trouble. But… theory can go so far… To produce a useful object (or more specifically, a material) the experiment is the fundamental key. That does not mean the purpose of theoretical design of materials is not useful. On the contrary, it is a good tool and a source of guidance (and sometimes inspiration).
