A solid is a physical system consisting of a collection of atoms that have a kinetic energy that is low enough for a long range order to occur. The atoms are arranged in fixed equilibrium positions, possibly giving rise to certain symmetries in the lattice. The atomic motion is limited to vibrations around these equilibrium positions.
