In a crude manner it is defined as a rigid arrangement of atoms held together by electromagnetic force in such a manner that they have optimum surrounding(Minimum strain,repulsion b/w there electrons, nuclei and max attraction b/w their nucleus and electrons of other atom) in their neighborhood . Arrangement can be periodic or non-periodic resulting crystalline and amorphous.
