In analytical mechanics, the action functional was introduced. This functional depends on the lagrangian of a system. When applying a variation on this functional, and saying that the variation on the action needs to be 0, this will yield the Euler-Lagrange equation. This equation gives the stationary points of the action functional. Using these equations we can say for example which path and at what velocities a particle will follow under influence of a given graviational or even electrical fields.
