The classical definition for correlation cannot be applied y quantum mechanics due to the fact that in quantum mechanics we are working with electrons, which are not distinguishable. In the classical definition we define the correlation like the difference in energy between the independent particle solution and the exact one; but this cannot be donde with electrons, hence the difference in the definition.
