The difference stems from the fundamentally different ways classical and quantum systems behave. Electrons are described by an asymmetric wavefunction, which means that this cannot be written as a symmtric product of individual wavefunctions that would sum their energies. This behaviour is not present in classical systems, which is why we need fundamentally different ways for describing the interaction energy in the system.
