Quantum-based materials calculations are no longer a theoretical matter. This is because the understanding of quantum physics is quite mature. The theory is not the limiting factor when pushing the field forwards. Where the field is at the moment is computational simulation.
This may be misunderstood by others because little physical experimentation is happening. However, the field seems to still be pushing boundaries, unlike the civil engineer example where few boundaries are being pushed.
