We can say that we are trying to calulate the properties of materials. We are not trying to ‘make’ new equations like let’s say Dirac did when he combined special relativity with quantum mechanics.
People probably intuitively think otherwise because they hear or read the word quantum based calculation. This way they don’t directly link this to something that is done on a computer, therefor thinking its something theoretical.
