In classical systems, correlation describes the effects of interactions between particles, while in quantum systems we must also account for exchange effects arising from the antisymmetry of the wave function. Since Hartree-Fock already includes exchange, quantum correlation is defined as the energy difference between the Hartree-Fock and exact solutions.
