The notion of constructing bridge and discovering materials are essentially different things. Making bridge in the foundation of known underlying laws of classical mechanics and discovering the elusive properties of materials with the notion of quantum mechanics without knowing the gateway. So these two examples in my opinion have began from contrasting hypothesis.
