to define a solid

To me, the way I instinctively understand solids on a day-to-day basis (on Earth) is the definition of “matter that holds its own shape,” as opposed to fluids that fill the shape of their containing volume. Of course, there are more rigorous ways to define a solid, but this is the most human way to get the point across.
