Although quantum physics fundamentally explains how solids behave, solving the full quantum equations for systems containing trillions of interacting atoms is computationally extremely difficult, making direct calculations impractical for most real materials. Therefore, scientists often use simplified models and approximations that capture the essential behavior while remaining computationally manageable.
