    Let’s say that we have a pipe with cross-sectional area A, through which water flows at a variable flow velocty u(t). Then the expression for the total mass of water that has passed thought the pipe from time t to time t+dt is the integral of (u(t)*A)/density from t to t+dt. This expression could be considered a functional applied to u, which is a function of time.
