In statistical field theory, specifically the Landau-Ginsburg theory describing the Ising model, there is a free energy functional F(m(x)) which describes the free energy as a function of the magnetisation m(x), which is a function of the position x. This was used to define the partition function and is used as a starting point to derive several properties of the system.
