We call quantum mechanics an ab initio model because it cannot be described in more fundamental terms. It is not feasible to describe classical mechanics at the macroscopic scale using quantum mechanics, and so we use the “fundamental” equations like for example Newton’s equations – which are fundamental in the classical sense. Classical electromagnetism also has fundamental equations (Maxwell’s equations) and so is also an ab initio model.
