In QFT, there are many functionals, for example the amplitude U(xa, xb, t) of a particle traveling from xa to xb, is given by the the integral of Dx(t)*e^(i*phi). This is a functional since x(t) is a time dependant function that serves as an input to U(xa, xb, t), which outputs a complex number.
