    The Dirac delta distribution is a functional that evaluates a function at zero.
    Energy is often also a functional, for example in field theory. Here the configuration of a field phi(x) is mapped to a certain energy of that field which is a real number.
    Another example are partition functions in statistical physics which depend on the function of the source J(x)
