In order to calculate materials on a quantum basis, the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics and implications of those principles must be known and readily applied to the problem at hand. Theoretical activities, however, are meant to discover those principles in the first place. Thus, theory must already be in place before we can calculate materials on a quantum basis.
